Varicose vein is a condition in which blood flows in the wrong direction and gets accumulated due to damage. This condition is seen most commonly in the legs as visibly twisted and bulged veins, and causes fatigue and itching. Stripping and ligation surgery is performed to treat and remove varicose veins.
Open stripping and ligation surgery can be performed under general or local anesthesia. Your doctor makes small incisions above and below the diseased vein. The vein is then ligated (tied off) at both ends and stripped (removed) through the lower incision. Your legs are bandaged to control swelling and bleeding after the surgery.
Like all surgeries, open stripping and ligation may be associated with a few complications (although rare) such as allergies due to the anesthetic, bleeding, swelling and numbness in the legs, and blood clots in the surrounding deep veins.
